Description

Leader: Jeff Hengesbach

Calling All Middle School Teachers!

Here is your chance to strengthen your science teaching skills with a national leader who was part of the very first Modeling Instruction course in 1992! Jeff Hengesbach has used this incredibly effective teaching approach for years in middle school classrooms, has helped developed curricula, led Modeling Instruction workshops across the country and is now coming to New York to share his many years of classroom-tested expertise with YOU. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn from the person who is currently head of the American Modeling Teachers Association.

The Middle School Science Modeling workshop will highlight and embed a notably successful method of STEM instruction known as Modeling Instruction(TM); which is characterized by inquiry-based labs, and classroom discussions based around whiteboarding. Come learn how to implement this fantastic teaching method, and how it can help improve and deepen your students’ understanding of crucial crosscutting concepts in science. This workshop will immerse you in Modeling Instruction so that you can develop the skills necessary to implement this student-centered, research-informed, standards-based curricular approach. As a participant, you will spend time observing instruction from the point of view of a student (“student-mode”), as this is a key component in reinforcing the intertwined content and pedagogical-content knowledge. You will engage in thought-provoking, pertinent experiments that you can utilize in your own classroom. Periodically, participants will switch to “teacher-mode”, to uncover and examine through readings and discussion the pedagogical rationale for all aspects of Modeling Instruction. The first two weeks will focus on physical, earth, & space sciences followed by an optional 3rd week on life sciences. Participants will learn some great activities to invigorate their teaching practices as well as learn some notable strategies to improve student engagement, content retention, and student discourse.

Schedule and Location:

The workshop will run for 2 weeks July 31, 2017 - Aug 11, 2017 (physical, earth & space sciences, with optional 3rd week, Aug 14-18 on life sciences) in Manhattan, at Teachers College, Columbia University (Zankel Hall Rm 404, 525 West 120 St., New York, NY 10027). The workshop sessions will be from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm on Monday - Thursday and Friday 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, followed by an optional social hour from 3:30 to 4:30.

*Note, this workshop requires a minimum number of participants. In the event there are not enough participants, the workshop may be cancelled, and all tuition would be refunded.
